Amoako Boafo

The one that got away

Exhibition

-> Feb 7 2024 – May 4 2024

Mariane Ibrahim

Mariane Ibrahim presents the first solo exhibition in Mexico City of new work by Amoako Boafo entitled The one that got away.

In The One That Got Away, her expressive figurations, distinguished by her unique finger painting gestures, take center stage, accompanied by a first exploration of the media of mosaic and stained glass. These new media offer a delicate transparency and firm resonance to her artistic repertoire.

Amoako Boafo's goal is to present the figures in their natural vitality, emitting their essence through captivating patterns and colors. Each portrait, depicting a friend, collaborator or someone related to the artist, lives happily within its frame. At the same time, the works blend harmoniously between generations throughout the exhibition.

The one that got away offers a contemplative space to explore the complexities and nuances of transitions and transformations. Amoako Boafo's canvases, varying in size and medium, take the viewer on a liberating journey, allowing both figures and viewers to separate themselves from preconceived notions and distractions. Framed against serene backgrounds, these works highlight the artist's exploration of the relationships between individuals and their broader cultural context.

Amoako Boafo's introspective work reflects his artistic career. Through his canvases, he bears witness to a life dedicated to painting, a faithful companion that never fails. This exhibition honors loyalty in an art form that demands resilience in the face of social expectations and the loneliness of creative endeavors. Freeing himself from the limitations of his origin, Amoako Boafo reveals a beauty and loyalty that reflects the intentional resistance infused into his canvases.

Amoako Boafo's inaugural European exhibition, Proper Love, at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna, will open to the public in autumn 2024
